KS3 Maths
When Year 7 pupils start Maths at Therfield they are taught in their tutor group as mixed ability classes for the first term. After half term they are placed in one of four sets. The appropriate set is decided upon by taking into account:
- the pupil's performance in test
- the work carried out in the first term
- evidence from their class teachers
- evidence from their Primary School
All pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 follow the National Curriculum. Several times throughout the year pupils work on opened ended investigations, carry out various surveys and develop their ICT skills. Strong emphasis is placed on numeracy and pupils practice their written and mental arithmetic skills regularly.
When the pupils reach year 9 the main focus for the year is their SAT tests which take place in May. Pupils are given regular practice on past papers and also on past mental arithmetic tests.
